Too Much Salt is a Bad Thing

This isn’t exactly related to a pool, but it is related to salt, too much salt. Salt IS related to pools, especially salt water pools, so…moving on!

In 1905 the Salton Sea was created on accident when an irrigation canal from the Colorado River broke. The landlocked lake formed as a result. It’s located in California’s Imperial and Coachella valleys. The Salton Sea is the largest in California, but you don’t wanna go for a swim there.

Because the lake is landlocked, the lake is getting saltier year by year by leaching salt from the surrounding soil. It is 30% saltier than the Pacific Ocean.

There’s so much salt in the lake, that millions of fish continue to die. The bones of the dead fish wash ashore, and have created a grotesque beach of bones.

Something like this definitely won’t happen if your saltwater pool is too salty. But it seemed like something interesting to share. Wouldn’t you agree?
