Tips for Driving in Treacherous Conditions

Winter means the holidays are here along with great food, and seeing your family. Unfortunately it also means icy roads and snowstorms in some areas. Dallas, Texas recently had icy weather that made driving treacherous, and various parts of the country still have storms going on. The best advice is to not drive whenever possible, but if you must, here’s some tips to keep in mind:

  • Let road crews improve bad conditions before you head out.
  • Make sure your tires provide enough traction.
  • Keep the gas tank full – it helps keep the fuel line from freezing.
  • Make sure your defroster works properly.
  • Stock up on supplies- like a scraper and small shovel.
  • Let someone know where you are going.
  • Drive slower and leave plenty of room to stop.
  • Brake gently.
  • Do not use cruise control.
  • Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses, and infrequently used roads.
  • Be gentle with the accelerator.

There’s plenty of more stuff you can do to stay safe during an ice storm. Don’t forget your family can’t wait to see you during the holidays! Stay safe and warm!
