GO GREEN with Solar Swimming Pool Heaters

Looking for ways to reduce heating costs and help the environment? Go for a solar heater. They are cost competitive with both gas and heat pump pool heaters and have low annual operating costs. How do they work? Most solar heaters include the following:

  • Solar Collector. The pool water is circulated through the collector to be heated by the sun.
  • Filter. This removes debris before water is pumped through the collector.
  • Pump. The pump circulates the water through the filter and the collector before it returns to the pool.
  • Flow Control Valve. This can be automatic or manual. It diverts water through the solar collector.

The water is first pumped through the filter then the collector, where it’s heated before returning to the pool. In hot climates, the solar heater can also be used to cool the pool by circulating water through the collector at night. When the collector temperature is similar to the pool temperature, the filtered water bypasses the collector and returns to the pool.

6 Pool Care Tips

Looking for some quick tips to care for your pool? Look no further because here are 6 Pool Care Tips:

  1. Algaecides and algae preventers. Algaecides kill algae and algaestats inhibit the algae growth.
  2. Balancers. These help maintain your pool equilibrium. Make sure you test your water weekly.
  3. Clarifiers. These bind together tiny particles so they can be filtered or vacuumed out. This is also a great remedy for cloudy water.
  4. Stain Preventers and Metal Controllers/Removers. These neutralize the effects of metals that get in your pool and spa water for make-up water and or a heater. Prevention is the best method because stain removal is difficult and costly.
  5. Oxidizers. Again, prevention is key. The best shock for preventive oxidation is potassium monopersulphate.
  6. Test kit. As said in number 2, you need to test water weekly! Testing is king!

Pool or Spa Party!

Wanting to have a pool or spa party but aren’t sure where to start? We have just the tips for you! We have listed a few creative ideas to throw the best party of the summer.

  • Hawaiian Luau. Bring the ‘Aloha’ to your backyard! Encourage guests to wear bright, colorful shirt. Make or buy some leis for all of your guests. Decorate with tropical flowers, bamboo embellishments, and tiki torches. Cook up some pineapple chicken or ham and have plenty of fruit and vegetables. If you’re feeling really adventurous, cook up a pig!
  • Beach Party. Have guests wear their flip flops and swimsuit for this party! If you have a sandbox, get the family together and build a sand castle for decoration. Put seashells and fish nets on tables and cover chairs with beach towels. Use plastic pails, shovels, and even Frisbees to serve snacks and drinks in. Throw some toy sailboats in the pool and cook up the types of food that you would find on a classic boardwalk such as hot dogs, hamburgers, French fries, and snow cones!
  • Movie Night. Create the perfect ‘float-in’ movie. Grab inflatable lounge chairs and move your big screen outdoors. Set up a ‘concession stand’ with candy, soda, and popcorn.
  • Birthday Party. Get creative with invitations and send flip flop, fish, or beach ball shaped cut outs. Use age appropriate games such as Marco Polo for the youngsters or water volleyball for an older crowd. For boys, have a water gun battle. For girls, create a spa day. Make sure to keep the menu light with fruit, sandwiches, and juice boxes.

Swimming Pool Games

Everyone knows about Marco Polo when it comes to swimming pool games, but if you’re tired of the same game, why not try something new? We have some fun games for you to try out this summer!

  • Freeze Tag: Pick one person to be ‘it.’ This person will go and tag as many people as they can. When others get tagged, they have to remain frozen until an unfrozen person swims through their legs underwater. ‘It’ must get everyone in the pool frozen before they can pass the torch.
  • Pool Tag Survivor: You need at least 4 players for this game. One person is chosen as ‘it.’ The remaining players are either a dolphin, frog, or submarine. The dolphins can only swim above water. Frogs must swim in the middle (between above water and underwater). Submarines must swim underwater. ‘It’ closes their eyes and calls out dolphin, frog, or submarine. Whichever they call, that person must try to swim to the other side of the pool without being tagged. When they reach the end they have to yell “Survivor!”
  • Coin Madness: Players drop coins or objects that sink into the water. On the count of three, everyone jumps in and tries to get as many coins as they can. The one with the most coins wins.
  • Handstand Races: Players must race from one side to the other on the hands! First one there and back wins.
  • Relay Races: Split up into teams. First team to successfully get all players from one side to the other wins.

Hot Tub Trivia!

Who was the first President to enjoy a hot tub at the White House?

If you guessed Bill Clinton, you were right! Watkins Manufacturing donated a seven-person “Grandee” model hot tub to the first family in 1997. Although pictures of the hot tub in use might not be the best portrayal of the President, the manufacturer had hopes of the gift helping his business out. Being that President Clinton had suffered a knee injury, the hot tub was put to great use for aquatic therapy purposes.

Getting Creative With Your Pool and Spa

Trying to think of a new way to bring some life to your pool and spa scene? All over the world people are coming up with new concepts to spice up their water life. Take England for example, with many tourists and citizens searching for ways to relax in the evening, they have created a ‘Hot Tub Cinema.’ Instead of driving to a drive-in movie and sitting in your car during the film, you can be ‘seated’ in a hot tub and soak in the warm water while watching a big screen movie.

To make things even more exciting, movie goers don’t find out what movie is showing until they get there! They know the genre, but the final movie choice isn’t unveiled until the night of the show.
St Lucia has also gotten creative. A resort in St Lucia has different colored lights in each pool and open-air bathroom that makes the resort look like a light show from a distance. They use glass tiles throughout their pools and restrooms to really accentuate the different colored lighting at nighttime, which creates an intimate but very fun experience for vacationers.
