10 Water Safety Rules

International Water Safety Day is on May 15. A good way to prepare is to watch Eve and Candace’s video on 10 Water Safety Rules. They are excellent guidelines to live by to help reduce drownings. According to the World Health Organization, drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional deaths worldwide.

That’s too many deaths caused by something that can be prevented. That’s why International Water Safety Day is so important.

Here are Eve’s and Candace’s 10 Water Safety Rules:

  1. Always swim with a buddy
  2. Know your limits
  3. Swim in safe areas
  4. Wear a life jacket if you can’t swim
  5. Stay away from ice
  6. “Reach or Throw, Don’t Go”
  7. Follow the rules
  8. Don’t swim in bad weather
  9. Feet first
  10. Learn to swim

I know some require explanation, mainly number 6. “Reach or Throw, Don’t Go” refers to rescuing someone who fell through ice. The last thing you want to do is go over and try to help them, you could fall through the ice as well. the safest thing to do is to grab something they can reach for, or throw something like a rope they can use to help get themselves out.

Besides havingĀ Eve’s and Candace’s 10 Water Safety Rules, InternationalWaterSafetyDay.org has a questionare to help calculate the impact of International Water Safety Day. Fill it out and see how many people you can help educate!
